Because it's the rule...

How many times do you hear this phrase used during the day in your early childhood program?

Why can't the children climb up the slide?

Because it's the RULE!

Who made the rule?

Ummm, childcare licensing, the school, the director.

Are you sure it is a rule?

Of course, it is a rule!

Why is it a rule?

Because they could get hurt!

So they don't get hurt going down the slide?

**crickets**

Why can't children build taller than their height with the blocks?

Because it's the RULE!

Who made the rule?

Ummm, childcare licensing, the school, the director.

Are you sure it is a rule?

Of course, it is a rule!

Why is it a rule?

Because they could get hurt!

So they don't get hurt when they build only at their height or lower?

Part of our mission as early childhood professionals is to provide support and guidance for the children in our care. Risk assessment is part of that support and guidance. Instead of letting our fear drive us, we need to pause and ask ourselves if this is a learning opportunity for a child (and ourselves.)

Next time you want to put a stop to something by using the phrase "because it's the rule." Take a minute to reflect upon what is driving this decision.

Is it fear? Could the child gain something from the opportunity? Can I find a way to be supportive without shutting down their ideas?
