But they're too young to talk about...
If you are an early childhood professional and are not angry about the attacks against LGBTQ+ families, are you really supporting all the children in your program?
For our youngest children, family is everything..
Young toddlers spend their days rocking baby dolls and practicing the caregiving they see modeled by the grownups in their lives.
Two-year-olds are often heard playing the "my Mommy" game where they say the phrase my mommy, my mommy over and over again.
Three-year-olds know the names of every parent that enters the classroom. They run with open arms to greet them at pick-up time each day because they are part of their school family.
Four-year-olds use their symbolic play skills to take on the roles of their caregivers. From dressing like them to their mannerisms to the conversations they have. Four-year-olds are pros at understanding, applying, and navigating the parts adults play in their lives.
Suppose you don't believe that representation matters. In that case, it is probably because you (and your children) have the privilege of always seeing yourselves represented. Representation does matter. Our children deserve to see themselves and their families represented in their school communities.
