Declarative Language

Declarative language focuses on sharing information or thoughts without putting the child under pressure to react immediately. This type of language is used when making a statement or comment without expecting a direct response from the child. Declarative language is often used with neurodivergent individuals. 

More often than not, adults use imperative language when communicating with children (e.g., "put your shoes on"). Learning how to use declarative language (i.e., I notice it's almost time to go outside. What do you need on your feet so we can play on the playground?) as an early childhood professional would be beneficial to all the children in your care. When we use declarative language, we create an environment that feels supportive and fosters positive communication. 

When you visualize declarative language, I want you to imagine using language that revolves around shared thoughts, observations, and descriptions. When we use declarative language instead of posing a question or placing a demand, we promote critical thinking and the child's ability to make decisions independently.

You only need one bite-size change to move from imperative to declarative language - a small incremental change equals a permanent one.

  • Express a Thought: Begin with an observation or an expression of curiosity-

    • Hmm, I'm noticing…

    • I'm wondering…

    • I'm thinking that…

  • Be specific: Instead of directing, you want to share a specific observation-

    • I see the legos are still on the floor. Where do you think they go?

    • Your lunch box is on the lunch table. I wonder if there is a place it goes when lunch is over.

    • Avoid using sarcasm, which young children often don't understand and can sound unkind and demeaning when used with them.
