As early childhood educators, we often discuss and focus on our connections with the children in our care and their families. We know the importance of creating connections filled with trust. We don’t often realize (or discuss) the need to build connections with others in the ECE field.
In my current role, it can be difficult to make those connections. I travel from place to place, so I don’t always get to have deep conversations with others in the field. I have to work harder to build consistent relationships with ECE folks. I pride myself on staying true to my roots, so I rely on these relationships to keep me grounded in the day-to-day work that is so critical to young children and their families.
Last week I had the privilege of spending two hours in deep conversation with an amazing young early childhood educator. I believe that infant teachers are the heart of early childhood education. Their individual, child-focused, responsive caregiving is what we should all strive to provide every day. It was such a pleasure to hear this young teacher talk about her work with such pride.
This week I had the pleasure of speaking to a more “seasoned” teacher (we’re not old; we have a little more seasoning!) We discussed the importance of nurturing and truly cherishing the children in our care. We also talked about the importance of quality professional development led by people who have been part of the day-to-day work in the classroom.
I have plans to build a space for deep connection, reflection, and fun. More details will be shared soon. In the meantime, I encourage you to find others in the field who share your passion. It is amazing how connection and conversation can inspire your professional (and personal) life!
