The Person Closest to the Problem is Closest to the Solution…

Last week, I presented two breakout sessions to a wonderful group of early childhood professionals at Leadership Day 2026 in Buffalo, New York. I value presenting at conferences because it lets me learn from others.

I value being a co-learner. During my workshops, I always gain insights from teachers—the everyday heroes of early childhood education. My work relies on listening to those who work directly with young children and families.

At conferences, I gain inspiration from keynote speakers and attendees alike. This year, Zeneta Everhart, City of Buffalo Common Councilwoman for the Masten District, shared a powerful message: “The person closest to the problem is the closest to the solution.”

This quote captures the impact that early childhood educators have as advocates. By working directly with children, you are uniquely positioned to address their needs. Whether responding to behaviors that feel challenging, advocating for a manageable daily pace, or ensuring every child is treated kindly, your proximity allows you to champion real solutions.

Early childhood professionals must advocate for children's and families' needs, while program leaders must support teachers. Effective advocacy comes from those closest to day-to-day challenges—they have the clearest understanding and are best equipped to lead positive change.
