Can we please STOP asking young children questions we already know the answer to...
If you and a friend are reading the same book, you would never ask them, "What's the title? Who is the author? Where does the story take place?"
Why do we insist on asking children these same questions when we already know the answer? This type of quiz show questioning certainly does not help us assess their ability to comprehend the story.
We should be asking open-ended questions where children can share their ideas and opinions.
Try these questions next time:
- Who is your favorite character?
- I wonder why.......
- What did it remind you of?
- What was the funniest, scariest, saddest part of the story?
