Last week’s email focused on the graphomotor skill Visual perception. Remember graphomotor skills are a specific set of skills necessary to write by hand. This week we will focus on motor planning.
Motor planning is our ability to problem solve while using our fine and gross motor skills to organize, plan and carry out moving our bodies. During this process our bones, joints and muscles send feedback to our brain. This feedback helps us establish what functions to execute. Some examples of motor planning are brushing our teeth, putting on a coat, walking up and down stairs, riding a bike and holding a pencil.
Remember that young children learn best through play. When we want to support growth we need to find engaging opportunities for the children in our care. Below are a list of ideas you can use to support motor planning development in your program.
